Hampden Dance Arts Dress Code

Children and Teen’s Classes
Basic rules
* Hair must be pulled back. No hair flopping in eyes or face. Hair that is not long enough for a ponytail but long enough to cover eyes should use a headband or barrettes.
* No costume or play hairbands such as rabbit ears or antennas. No large distracting hairpieces and nothing that falls off the head easily.
* No jewelry of any kind except small earring studs
* Children should not wear fitness app watches. While it’s great to be excited about one’s fitness stats, I have observed students diverting their attention to their fitness watches in the middle of class instruction.
* Dance shoes should not be purchased that are more than a half size big, especially tap shoes. Oversize tap shoes can come flying off the student’s foot. The cleats on the bottom of tap shoes are very hard and can hurt another person or damage property. Discretion of shoe size is solely up to the teacher and studio director. If shoes are deemed to large you must replace them with a size that fits properly.

Adult Classes

Men & Women- We do not have a strict dress code for our adult classes. It is recommended to have the proper dance shoes for classes.
Suggestions-
BalletWomen are welcome and encouraged to wear the traditional class clothing of a leotard, tights, skirt or dance shorts, and warm up wear. Most students, however, will wear athletic attire such as leggings, yoga pants, tank/spaghetti strap/yoga tops, or a tshirt. You will be stretching forward, so shirts that do not flop over your head when you bend over are a good idea. Do not wear any pants that you can trip on, (pants with a lot of fabric around the ankles and feet that you can accidentally step on). Men- Athletic pants or shorts such as sweat pants, yoga pants or jazz pants. Any color tshirt or tank top. You will be stretching forward so shirts that do not flip over your head when you bend forward are recommended.
Jazz/Modern/Hip Hop/TapWomen & Men– Anything athletic such as recommended above for ballet

Ballet– Any color canvas or leather ballet slippers
Jazz– Any color jazz booty shoe or split sole jazz sneaker
Hip Hop– sneakers
Modern, Modern/Jazz– on our hardwood floor, students find it comfortable to wear ballet or lyrical shoes for this class
